Some 25 years ago South Shore Country Club, one of the premier private courses in Massachusetts, was sold to developers who had plans to destroy its lush, green fairways and emerald putting greens and erect housing lots.
Fortunately, their plan failed.
Because of forward thinking Hingham golf enthusiasts such as Robert DiCenso, George Kay, John Barry, Robert Garrity, Ellen Harvey and George Ford, the course was saved.
These dedicated individuals were committed to ensuring the future of South Shore Country Club and were instrumental in helping the town manage the course in its first few years of ownership.
This did not happen overnight. Countless hours of hard work, planning and lobbying made the South Shore Country Club we play today a reality.
Every time we tee it up and walk down these fairways, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to these individuals who volunteered their time to ensure future generations would enjoy playing golf at one of the finest courses in the state. In an effort to show our appreciation, we are inaugurating a new award for our association members. The ‘Player of the Year’ award, which we will call the Founders’ Cup, will honor those individuals who saved South Shore Country Club from being developed into private homes and commercial businesses.
Player of the Year Award eligibility: Each player competing in Men’s Association tournaments will be eligible for the South Shore Country Club Men’s Association ‘Player of the Year’ award, to be called the Founder’s Cup
